The Tragedy of Carmen features Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Isola Jones in her signature role. This is Isolas' fourth season with Opera at the Acorn. August 7, 2010The Tragedy of Carmen
Acorn Theater
The Tragedy of Carmen by Georges Bizet is one of the most performed operas ever. Why? Maybe because it is chock full of some of the greatest songs ever written. In this version, which lasts less than two hours, they’re all still there. You will be overwhelmed by the concentration of powerful music, dramatic pace, and renewed focus on the character of Carmen made possible by a combination of judicious cuts and serious vocal talent. With narration by founder Robert Swan, tenor Darrell Rowader as Don Jose, baritone Tom Hall as Escamillo, Isola Jones as Carmen, and soprano Amy Fuller as Michaela, Carmens tragic choice will be brought into the light. This is a don't miss event! Isola Jones is internationally recognized as an extraordinary mezzo-soprano. Making her professional debut in the Verdi Requiem with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Jones within two years made her Metropolitan Opera debt in the role of Olga in Eugene Onegin. Since then she has sung more than 500 performances as a leading artist at The Met, paired with such international artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Leontyne Price, Joan Sutherand, and performing under the baton of Richard Bonynge and James Levine. It is her portrayal of Carmen, her signature role, for which she is best known. August 7, 2010Three Oaks Music in the Park

We partner with Columbia College Chicago to Sarah Marie Young is a vocal chameleon, but still stays true to her own unique voice, deep rooted in gospel, with a creative jazz edge. Whether you are in a crowded bar or sitting quietly in an auditorium, this songbird can make a piece jump out at you as easily as she can hypnotise you into a musical stupor. Her loyalty to tradition, beautiful interpretation of the standards, and joyful presence go together to give a memorable performance. Having shared the stage with greats like Buddy Guy, Niki Hans, and jazz masters such as drummers George Fludas and Charles Heath, organist Chris Foreman, pianist Willerm Delisfort, and sang in various groups such as the progressive Chicago Yestet, The N.S.A. Ensemble, and The Tim Fitzgerald Quartet, Sarah Marie is a true musician and natural born entertainer. August 14, 2010 - August 15, 2010Skips Open-Air European Farmers Market

107 Generations Dr
Matt Alber blends extraordinary, emotional nuance with impeccable vocal range and style. Following tenure with the San Francisco-based classical ensemble, Chanticleer, winning two Grammy Awards, Matt turned his attention to contemporary projects. In 2004 Alber released a self-produced album of experimental songs called Nonchalant with co-producer writer Jeff Crerie at Utmosis in San Francisco. The duo became fast friends capturing the sounds of neighboring wind chimes and borrowing banjo players from the park to create their neo art songs on Macintosh computers. Within months Alber was signed by Tommy Boy as the first artist to their new imprint, Silver Label, and immediately began work refining his independent release into the full-length, Hide Nothing. Selected among the Top 8 albums of the 2009 by Audiofile, the album is resplendent with glitchy-orchestral romance (End of the World, Fieldtrip Buddy) and delves deep into the mystic (Rivers & Tides, Beotia) including an intimate re-telling of Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek. Alber's unfailing voice threads these songs together with a constant airy nuance close to the ears (and heart). Many fans have come to know Matt through the achingly romantic 1960's themed video of “End of the World” which won the OUT Music Awards Video of the Year for 2009 and was chosen as the number one gay music video of the 2009 by After Elton.
