Harvest Days add more color to nature's fall palette.
There's
something uniquely special about the Fall Season in Harbor Country. Maybe
it's the crispness of the morning air. It might be the smell of grapes
wafting in the breeze. And then there's the majestic visual appeal of
colorful fall foliage along every horizon.
As
summer draws visitors to Harbor Country to the beach, autumn draws us
inland to the countryside. Here we find miles of cornfields ready for
harvest, You'll discover acres of bright orange pumpkins at many roadside
markets. As you travel the byways by car or bicycle, you'll hear the crackling
of leaves underfoot-remnants of the glorious canopy of color overhead.
As summer was the time to surround yourself with water and beach sand,
autumn is a time to reconnect to the roots of Mother Nature. It's as if
she's throwing a farewell party, and we're invited to share in the bounty.
Harvest
Days in Harbor Country is celebrated October 5-8. This three-day weekend
gives ample time to explore farm and field, but it also brings the celebration
to the back door of our many shops, galleries, restaurants and lodging
facilities. Many of our Harbor Country businesses-from New Buffalo, Three
Oaks, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert and Sawyer-host special events that
include open houses, gallery and artist receptions, culinary demonstrations,
special sales, and family fun activities. There's so much going on we hope
you can get it all done in a weekend. If you can't, you're cordially invited
back any time soon.
Watch out for “live” scarecrows in Union Pier!
Union Pier is getting into the Autumn spirit for Harbor Country Harvest
Days, October 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th.
The weekend kicks off with a gallery crawl on Friday night from 7-10 p.m.
Enjoy a glass of wine and special treats from local restaurants at the
galleries that are located on the Red Arrow Hwy. Visit Local Color Gallery
for “Tramp Art”-Featuring art and accessories for you home.
The show features the work of James L. Maroney. James creates wonderful,
whimsical, functional pieces of art from found objects. He collects objects
that others would discard, to make art that is useful or just plain fun
to play with. Next stop in at Acorn Gallery to view the works of their
artists. Just across the street meet John at John A Knudsen Workshop/Gallery.
Talk to him about his process for making prints. Stop next door at Patty’s
Picks to meet local furniture maker, Van Purdy of Barnboard Designs. Van
creates accessories and furniture from local antique barns that were scheduled
to be destroyed.
On Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. get a free sampling of select homemade
and European delicacies from over 40 countries at Taste of Milda’s
Corner Market. Then hop aboard the Union Pier Hay ride. Purchase your
